Government sells buffer onions at Rs 35/kg across 17 cities to ease prices

The Indian government has launched subsidized onion sales at Rs 35 per kilogram to counter rising prices in the retail market. Approximately 4,000 tonnes of onions are being distributed across 17 cities as part of this buffer stock initiative. Fresh kharif onion arrivals are expected from mid-October, which should help improve overall supply. However, the rabi crop faced damage from unseasonal rains, hampering storage and adding pressure to current supplies. The measure is aimed at providing relief to consumers who have been struggling with elevated onion prices.
