India captain Shubman Gill stated that allowing Virat Kohli to play freely is key to getting the best out of him. Kohli backed that belief with a dominant unbeaten 139 off 88 balls in the first ODI against West Indies on Sunday. Gill himself contributed 110 runs, and the two batters combined for a 151-run partnership. India won the match by eight wickets at the Greenfield International Stadium.
