France has documented its first known 'fire cloud', known scientifically as a pyrocumulonimbus, amid a wave of extreme wildfires across Europe. This rare phenomenon forms when intense heat from a wildfire drives smoke, air, and moisture high into the atmosphere, creating a towering storm system. The resulting cloud is capable of generating powerful winds, lightning, and even new fires. This effectively allows a wildfire to influence or generate its own weather conditions, making containment significantly more difficult.
