In 1927, John D. Rockefeller Jr. began discreetly purchasing large tracts of land in Wyoming's Jackson Hole region. He used a front company called the Snake River Land Company to conceal his identity during the acquisitions. Over time, the operation accumulated more than 35,000 acres at a total cost of $1.4 million. Rockefeller subsequently donated all the acquired land to the United States government. The land was eventually incorporated into what is now Grand Teton National Park.
