FCC Clears Reflect Orbital to Launch First Sunlight-Redirecting Space Mirror

California-based startup Reflect Orbital has received FCC authorization to launch its first prototype space mirror into low-Earth orbit later this year. The satellite, named Eärendil-1 after a Tolkien character, features an 18-meter reflective surface designed to redirect sunlight toward specific areas on Earth during nighttime hours. The approval was granted despite concerns from the astronomical community about potential interference with optical telescope observations. If the prototype performs as intended, Reflect Orbital plans to expand the project into a full constellation of similar mirrors.
