Entry-Level Data Engineering Roles Have Collapsed 67% Since AI Went Mainstream

Junior data engineering job postings have fallen 67% since generative AI became widespread, with only 3% of 6,877 active US postings in May 2026 classified as entry-level — roughly 219 roles. Stanford's Digital Economy Lab found that employment among junior developers aged 22–25 dropped 16% since ChatGPT launched, while workers over 30 in high-AI-exposure fields saw growth of 6–12%. AI tools such as dbt Copilot and Databricks Assistant have automated the routine tasks — SQL staging, schema mapping, boilerplate testing — that traditionally served as the learning foundation for junior engineers. Despite this, the broader data engineering market is growing, with 260,000 US openings projected and the global market valued at $105 billion in 2026, but virtually all gains are concentrated in senior and specialized roles. The result is a structural bifurcation rather than a cyclical downturn, with 54% of engineering leaders citing AI copilots as the reason they plan to hire fewer junior staff in 2026.
