Why Ancient Cities Keep Appearing Under Modern Ones, Explained

Archaeologists consistently discover ancient cities beneath modern ones because settlements were repeatedly built on the same strategically valuable sites. These locations offered critical advantages such as access to water, fertile land, and trade routes that remained desirable across generations. As populations grew, new construction was layered on top of existing infrastructure rather than starting fresh elsewhere. This continuous rebuilding gradually raised ground levels over centuries, burying older structures deep underground. The result is a stratified urban landscape where modern cities unknowingly sit atop the ruins of their ancient predecessors.
