Discord Launches Global Age Estimation System After Scrapping Earlier Verification

Discord is rolling out a new age assurance system globally, excluding Australia and the UK, starting today. The platform will automatically assign users to estimated age groups using multiple account signals, rather than requiring identity documents or selfies. Users estimated to be between 13 and 17 will face account restrictions under the new approach. This comes seven months after Discord halted its previous age verification rollout in February due to user backlash over data privacy concerns. The earlier system had drawn criticism for requiring adults to submit video selfies or government-issued ID to verify their age.
