Developer Rebuilds N-Back Trainer Tutorial Three Times, Struggles to Measure Clarity

A developer building a web-based N-Back working memory trainer has overhauled its tutorial three times after early users failed to understand the interface or complete sessions. The first version was a brief demo that left users confused about controls, while a second 'Academy' section with detailed theory caused drop-offs before users ever tried the exercise. The current version runs the tutorial directly on the game interface, guiding users through visual and audio signals in stages before ending with a five-signal independent test. Analytics from September 8–14 showed 57 users started the tutorial and 26 completed it, but the developer notes that finishing the test does not confirm whether users actually understood the mechanics. The core challenge remains: existing metrics track tutorial completion but cannot distinguish between users who grasped the concept and those who simply clicked through.
