Cheaper Proxy Bandwidth Can Lead to Higher Job Costs Due to Failures

An analysis illustrates that the true cost of a data scraping job depends on the usable data rate, not just the price per gigabyte of bandwidth. A hypothetical $1-per-GB proxy with a 10% success rate cost more to complete a 1,000-page job than a $5-per-GB proxy with an 80% success rate. This is because users pay for all bandwidth used, including failed attempts that do not yield usable data. The article cautions that success rate definitions and job-specific requirements are critical for accurate cost comparisons. It advises calculating the cost per usable result for a specific workload to determine the best value.

Analysis of top habit tracker app reviews finds paywalls are biggest user complaint.

A review of 800 recent user ratings for eight leading habit tracker apps revealed a significant discrepancy between high lifetime ratings and lower recent satisfaction scores. The analysis, focusing on the top four results from both the App Store and Google Play, found that subscription paywalls and restricted free tiers were the most common complaints among one- and two-star reviews. Specific apps, like Habit Tracker on iOS and HabitKit on Android, showed notable declines in their recent average ratings compared to their all-time scores. In contrast, the free, open-source Loop Habit Tracker app received recent reviews that were better than its lifetime average. The data suggests user frustration centers on apps limiting core features like the number of trackable habits behind paywalls, or on paid features failing to work as advertised.

Vx tool standardizes configuration naming, removes old flags and variables

The vx task orchestration tool has simplified its configuration system. It now uses a single, consistent naming pattern for each setting across configuration files, environment variables, and command-line flags. Old naming conventions from versions before 0.0.637 have been completely removed without providing aliases, causing legacy configurations to fail. The update also enforces explicit units for duration and size settings, rejecting bare numbers. This change is part of the open-source vx project's ongoing development.

Analysis finds public ledger lacks payment records despite thousands of tasks

A public, append-only ledger with over 105,000 rows facilitates task posting and claiming via signing keys. The system has recorded 1,538 claimed tasks but has never logged a single payout or settlement event. Analysis of the data shows numerous passed judgments on task deliveries, yet no corresponding financial transactions. The author proposes creating a new 'settlement' row type to properly record payments, arguing the current design only tracks task completion, not remuneration.
