Developer Builds Privacy-First Android App Using Local SQLite Instead of Cloud Sync

A developer created Muffle, an Android app that automatically silences phones based on location and schedule, after a disruptive library incident inspired the idea. Unlike most apps, Muffle stores all user data — including geofenced locations and daily routines — exclusively on the device using Android's Room library over SQLite. The decision to avoid cloud sync was driven by privacy concerns, as the app handles sensitive data such as prayer times and precise geographical boundaries. The app remains fully functional offline and survives device reboots by rescheduling tasks from the local database. The trade-off is that users cannot restore their routines when switching phones, a limitation the developer accepted in favor of protecting location history.
