Developer Builds Battery-Friendly Android App That Auto-Silences Phone by Location

A developer created an Android app called Muffle after a loud ringtone disrupted a library session, highlighting the everyday problem of manually managing phone sound profiles. The app automatically adjusts ringer modes based on the user's location and schedule, eliminating the need for repeated manual toggling. To avoid heavy battery drain, the developer used Google Play Services' GeofencingClient, which relies on cellular towers and Wi-Fi rather than continuous GPS polling. A custom ForegroundService acts as the app's core, managing transitions between silent, vibrate, and normal modes while supporting emergency bypass contacts via Do Not Disturb filters. The hybrid architecture keeps battery consumption low while ensuring sound settings adapt reliably to the user's context without any manual input.
