Developer abandons elderly-monitoring app, citing Android limits and unreachable users

A developer has shut down 'How Are You?!', an Android app designed to passively monitor elderly people living alone by detecting behavioral anomalies without any wearable or manual input. The project was abandoned primarily because aggressive battery management on cheaper Android devices could silently kill background processes, making it impossible to guarantee the continuous monitoring the app's core promise required. Beyond technical hurdles, the developer found that the most relevant online communities — caregiver and dementia support forums — prohibit promotional posts, cutting off access to the very audience who needed the tool. Distribution attempts in developer-facing spaces proved fruitless, as those audiences were building competing products rather than seeking solutions.
