Cuban Developer Builds Homegrown Social Network to Bypass Connectivity Barriers

Frank, a developer based in Havana, Cuba, has built Boniatillo, a microblogging social network designed specifically for Cuban internet conditions. The platform addresses local challenges such as slow mobile connections, expensive data costs, and the absence of international payment gateways like Stripe or PayPal. Boniatillo supports text posts, images, short videos, and polls, while enabling creators to earn money through tips and paid subscriptions via Transfermóvil, Cuba's national payment system. Built entirely in vanilla PHP 8.3 without any framework, the platform aggressively optimizes media — compressing images by up to 99% and capping 15-second videos at around 300 KB. Since launching, Boniatillo has attracted over 150 registered users and is growing at roughly three to four new users per day.
