Canadian wildfire smoke cut North American and European solar output by 6.38 TWh in 2023

Wildfire smoke from Canadian wildfires in 2023 significantly reduced solar power generation across North America and Europe, resulting in economic losses estimated at $1.9 billion. The disruption also led to increased carbon emissions as alternative energy sources compensated for the shortfall. Beyond smoke, other air pollutants such as vehicle emissions further hamper solar panel efficiency. Wildfires can additionally cause direct physical damage to solar farm infrastructure and equipment. Experts suggest that better forecasting models and improved vegetation management could help reduce these impacts on solar energy output.
