California Gibbon Sanctuary Marks 50 Years of Endangered Primate Conservation

A gibbon sanctuary located north of Los Angeles is celebrating five decades of protecting endangered primates. Founded in 1976, the facility currently cares for around 40 primates across five different species. In addition to breeding programs, the sanctuary conducts non-invasive research, facilitates inter-facility animal exchanges, and educates college students on animal care. As it looks to the future, the organization is seeking funding to upgrade animal habitats and build a dedicated visitor education center.
