AWS Researchers Show AI Orchestrators Can Be Replaced by Math-Based Logic

Researchers at the AWS Generative AI Innovation Center have published a study questioning whether the coordinator in a multi-agent AI system needs to be an AI model at all. The team proposed an alternative framework called UnitBoost, which replaces the AI orchestrator with a fixed mathematical operator that selects the best value for each output field and flags incomplete fields for the next iteration. Tested across three benchmark datasets, UnitBoost outperformed AI-based orchestrators under equal-information conditions by margins of 0.048 to 0.076, and improved scores across six existing systems without modifying the underlying worker agents. The approach offers key advantages including order-independence, full data provenance tracking, and testable failure conditions, trading flexible AI reasoning for verifiable transparency. The researchers also acknowledged limitations, noting the method is unsuitable for tasks that cannot be broken into discrete units or when output sources cannot be individually traced.
