An Australian sunscreen manufacturer is at the centre of multimillion-dollar legal claims following the recall of 20 products that failed to meet their stated SPF ratings. The products, all based on a shared base formula, were found to fall far short of their advertised sun protection levels. Beauty brand Ultra Violette is among those pursuing legal action, after its SPF50+ sunscreen tested at values as low as SPF 2.9 and 4. The base formula supplier, Wild Child Laboratories, entered liquidation in August, complicating efforts to seek accountability. The recalls have raised broader concerns about sunscreen safety standards and third-party manufacturing oversight in Australia.
