India may toughen anti-cheating law with jail terms beyond 10 years

The Indian government is planning to amend the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024 to increase the maximum jail term for offenders beyond the current 10-year ceiling. The proposed amendment is expected to be taken up by the Cabinet shortly, according to sources cited by the Times of India. The 2024 law was enacted to tackle paper leaks, cheating, and organised malpractice in major public examinations such as UPSC, SSC, and NTA-conducted tests. Under the existing provisions, offenders face penalties of up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to Rs 1 crore. The anticipated changes signal the government's intent to impose stricter deterrents against exam fraud.
