UNESCO Warns Pakistan of Delisting Taxila Over Cement Use on Ancient Walls

Taxila, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Pakistan's Punjab province, is facing a delisting warning from the United Nations over improper conservation practices. Pakistani authorities used cement on the walls of the Vedic-era archaeological site, which experts consider damaging to ancient structures. The site, located in Rawalpindi district, encompasses a vast range of historical remains including a Mesolithic cave, early settlement ruins, Buddhist monasteries, and a mosque and madrassa. UNESCO has flagged the use of modern cement as incompatible with internationally accepted heritage preservation standards. The warning signals that Taxila could lose its World Heritage status if corrective measures are not taken.
