Fixing the problem is not straightforward, because the vulnerability exists in versions of PHP stretching back about 20 years, many of which are no longer supported. As a result, some older, unmaintained sites and services may have no practical choice but to shut down permanently. Security firm Wiz has described the issue as among the most severe vulnerabilities in software history.
