Anthropic's Claude designs effective proteins in days, far outpacing human researchers

Anthropic's AI model Claude successfully designed protein binders against 14 out of 15 targets, a task that typically takes scientists several months. Out of 1,320 designs submitted, 354 binders were validated by Adaptyv Bio and Twist Bioscience, yielding a hit rate of 35.1%. This significantly exceeds the field's standard success rate of 10 to 15 percent. In a separate evaluation, Claude Opus 5 matched a contract laboratory's purity reading in just 19 minutes. Despite these advances, Anthropic has kept protein design capabilities blocked in its Fable 5 system due to concerns over potential bioweapon misuse.
