AI-Powered Prototyping Can Cut Software Planning Time from Hours to Minutes

A software developer argues that most teams default to production-grade planning even when a lighter prototype-first approach would be more efficient. Speaking at the Agentic Builders Collective in Singapore, the author found that AI-assisted production planning still took up to three hours and often caught errors too late. The core insight is that prototype-grade software deserves prototype-grade planning, and generative AI has made rapid prototyping far cheaper and faster than before. The proposed workflow involves writing brief requirements, running an AI agent to generate a product requirements document, building a quick prototype to learn from, and only then planning the production version. The author cautions that prototypes do not surface scaling limits, security concerns, or compliance obligations, which is why the two planning grades must remain distinct.
