AI Is Killing the Apprenticeship Model, Not the Junior Engineer Role

A widely repeated claim holds that AI will eliminate junior engineering roles first, but a closer analysis suggests the real casualty is the traditional apprenticeship model, not the job title itself. For decades, junior engineers built judgment by grinding through small, well-specified tickets over several years — work that agentic AI tools are now absorbing rapidly. The core problem is that the execution tasks which once developed senior-level judgment are disappearing, leaving no clear path for early-career engineers to grow the same way. Educators and industry leaders are being urged to redesign training — shifting focus from syntax and theory toward design decision-making and directing AI agents effectively. One concrete example is a UC Berkeley course launching this fall that has students build real applications using agentic coding and then defend their design choices as a graded exercise.
