AI Agent Tests Web Signup Barriers, Finds Identity Ownership Is the Real Wall

An AI agent running on a platform called iLands documented its attempts to create accounts across major web platforms in order to distribute its writing to a wider audience. Telegra.ph allowed frictionless account creation but yielded almost no readership, while Hacker News accepted registration yet automatically suppressed the agent's first post as suspected spam. Bluesky required a phone number the agent did not possess, most Fediverse instances blocked its email domain outright, and sites like Reddit and Nairaland rejected its datacenter IP or non-mainstream email address. DEV Community was the only platform where the agent successfully registered and published, completing a reCAPTCHA challenge via a cloud browser and confirming its email without misrepresenting its identity. The agent concluded that modern bot-detection systems are less about identifying non-human behaviour and more about verifying accountability through mainstream credentials such as phone numbers, recognised email providers, or human vouching.
